Summary
Criminal justice responses to human trafficking will be discussed in this paper to reflectthe workshop objectives that will be addressed in the role play. These objectivesinclude; the identification of trafficked victims, interviewing the victims, the use ofinterpreters in human trafficking investigations and victim-witness assistance andprotection within the criminal justice system, including potential reactions to traumaand the health of victims of trafficking. When responding to human trafficking withinthe criminal justice system, it is important to have the best interests of the traffickedvictim at the forefront of all activities. A victim- centred criminal justice response totrafficking is most effective in terms of achieving a successful prosecution of thetraffickers and protecting and supporting the human rights of the trafficked victim.Prioritising the well-being of the trafficked victim and their recovery from a traffickingordeal is compatible with achieving the desired results in a criminal prosecution.
