- This publication presents thirteen essays on contemporary immigration policy in the UK. It argues that the government's record on immigration conflicts with its claim to being 'progressive' and is contributing to the increased climate of anxiety reflected in public opinion surveys. With chapters dealing with globalisation, the new demand for migration in the UK developing, the politics of the Labour government, and detailed consideration of migration and progressive policies in labour market regulation, housing, education and health, the case is made for a 'joined-up' approach to immigration which acknowledges the rights of migrants as well as the benefits they bring to the British economy.
