By way of an introduction to this issue on ‘The Politics of HumanTrafficking,’ therefore, we shall detail some of the major critiques of the anti-trafficking paradigm and situate the articles featured here by Rebecca Surtees, Patrizia Testai, Marco Gramegna, Meng-Hsuan Chou, Caroline Ausserer, and Mary Buckley squarely within the growing body of literature seeking to challenge that paradigm. At the root of many of these critiques are the feminist and critical theory positions which see policy responses as conditioned by the operation of a trafficking discourse that is both narrow and restrictive. In highlighting how this discourse operates, then, this issue of the St Antony’s International Review is part of a wider attempt to broaden its scope.
